During a sixth grade English class, seven weeks into the school year.

Kid: Ms. Williams, what's a non?
Me: A what?
Kid: A non.
Me: I'm not understanding what you're saying.
Kid: A non!
Me: Spell it for me, sweetheart.
Kid: N-O-U-N. Non.
Me: Oh! You mean noun! You've never studies nouns before?
Kid: Nah, last year our teacher said grammar was boring, so she wasn't gonna teach it.
Me: Yeahhhh, that's not okay, kiddo.
Kid: We don't need to know it, though, right?
Me: This is English, of course you do!
