"The Great Depression" told from the Perspective of 5th Graders

I have a love/hate relationship with assigning group projects.  They are definitely easier to grade than literary arguments, but the constant bickering over what colors to use and who's not pulling their weight have to be on my top ten list of things that make my skin crawl.  However, because I'm a team player (and I like being able to pay rent), I assigned one of our required PBL units riiiiiight before Thanksgiving break. Teaching 5th graders how to research a topic turned out to be funnier than I thought it would be.  Now that I've accepted the inevitability that their presentations will be highly historically inaccurate, I'm actually looking forward to their unprecedented retelling of events surrounding The Great Depression.  Here's a sneak peak!

"The Great Depression was when America was really sad about losing the Dust Bowl."

"Frederick Roosevelt was a rich man."

"The Stock Market Crash of 1929 caused hurricanes, tornadoes, thunderstorms, and fires. Many people died."

"Black Tuesday was kind of like Black Friday."

"Franklin D. Roosevelt was a short white man."

"The New Deal was like an old card game that people don't play anymore."

"Are Hoovervilles like Who-ville , Ms. Williams?"

"Wait....Ms. Williams, who crashed into the stock market, because I can't find it online?"

"In October of 1929, a really bad hurricane came and blew away the stock market."

This is after DAYS of research in the library. Our future is mighty bright.
