Classroom Chronicles: Baltimore #3

So every year since I started teaching, I've frequently made cookies/chess squares/brownies for my students.  Every two weeks, my sister witnessed the many nights I was up past midnight with a glass of wine in hand and flour on my pants, making sure that I had delightful treats for my students to consume in exchange for reduced chatter and hard work in class :)

Incentive Fridays were always a big hit!

Well, since moving to Baltimore, the baking has stopped.  I just haven't felt like showering my students with sweets, especially since they're always so SOUR.

In the spirit of Christmas, I decided to try an Incentive Friday with them.  At the beginning of the week, I promised each of my classes made-from-scratch chocolate chip cookies if they had a full week of solid work and minimal behavior issues.  Two of my three classes earned the incentive, so I ended up baking 60 cookies on Thursday night.  The reactions were interesting.

Kid 1: Yo, Ms. Williams, where our cookies at? You forgot them didn't you.
Me: I have them.
Kid 2: Can we get them now?
Kid 3: If there nasty I ain't eating them!
Me: Well aren't you polite.

See what I mean? Always SOUR.

Kid 4: These are good! I was a lil' worried. No offense, but you don't look like you cook.
Me: Glad they meet your approval!
Kid 5: These are better than my mom's. She can't really cook anything, but her cookies are usually straight.
Kid 6: This is the first time a teacher has ever made me something!
Kid 7: Yeah, Ms. Williams, you actually took the time to bake us cookies? Why you ain't just buy them from the store?
Me: You took the time to work hard this week, I took the time to bake you cookies.
Kid 7: That's cool. Just buy them next time though, this week was too hard.

Despite mixed, yet interesting reviews, we'll see if they earn more Incentive Fridays.
